During the holiday season, everyone seems to have a lot of expenditures. People are purchasing gifts for their family, their friends, their acquaintances, their coworkers, etc. Many people go out to dinner or cocktails more often during the holiday season as well. Many, if not all of these purchases wind up on your credit card. When the bill arrives and the amount due is more than you expected, it can be overwhelming, depressing, and difficult to repay in a timely manner. What can you do? Managing credit card debt is vital to your financial future success.
Here are three important things to consider when buying gifts during the holidays:
- Establish a Budget – You need to pay for your purchases. Ideally, when the bill arrives each month, you would pay off the entire balance. This minimizes any interest payments. Determine how much money that you can afford to spend on gifts and still be able to make your payments at the end of the month when the bill comes. If you know it advance, how much money you can spend, you are more apt to limit how much you will spend on each person.
- Buy in Bulk – When you are purchasing presents for friends or coworkers, you could buy many of them the same item. If you are a member of one of the warehouse stores, such as Costco, you can buy goods in larger quantities and save money. For instance, Costco sells gift certificates to See’s Candy. You can either give the certificate to some of the people on your list, or you could go to the store and redeem the certificates for merchandise by yourself. The price that you will pay at the warehouse stores is considerably less than the retail price would be.
- Buy Fewer Gifts – This may sound obvious, but you do not need to get people multiple presents. You can buy one item for each person on your list. Buy lesser-priced items for some people, and higher-priced merchandise for those few, special people on your list.
These are three very easy to follow, basic ideas to help you control your expenses during the holidays. Controlling how much you spend will make a huge difference in your financial future.
It is extremely important to control how much money that you are spending. Managing credit card debt is something that should always be on the forefront of your mind.
